SHOP! In Clitheroe
Saturday 11th September – Saturday 18th September

Shop until you drop!
Shop! will see poetry displayed in over 50 town centre shops in a series of innovative and eye-catching window displays during the week Saturday 11 September to Saturday 18 September, as part of the Pennine Lancashire Festival of Food and Culture.
The poetry will include original work by the Pennine Lancashire Poetry Stanza alongside work by established and well-known poets, such as Jean Sprackland, whose poem, Hands, will be displayed in the Castle Chippy, Moor Lane.
The window displays will include a 5ft wall hanging of Clitheroe author Jane Eagland’s poem, I am a Knitted Woman, at Designer Knitting Yarns in Moor Lane. Offices including Mortimers, Chenery Maher Solicitors and John Turner, Independent Financial Adviser are waxing lyrical over the poems individually written with their business in mind.
The best poems will also be published in an anthology called Here is Where the Candy Sticks: Poems about Shopping in Clitheroe edited by Jo Harding, who runs Clitheroe Books, and the council’s principal communications officer, Theresa Robson, and produced by Design 360 Ltd of Stonyhurst.
The anthology will feature a series of powerful images depicting Clitheroe traders at work, including Amelia’s Brides, The Flower Shop, Cowmans Famous Sausage Shop, The Chocolate Box and Patches & Buttons amongst many others, photographed by Pendleton photographer Dean Carney.
There will also be a series of poetry readings at shops throughout Clitheroe and a poetry trail.
Jo Harding said “Several shopkeepers are really going to town on their displays, particularly Designer Knitting Yarns and Raffia, which look set to be some of the focal points of the week.
“Dean Carney’s photography captures the timeless artisan atmosphere of Clitheroe’s award-winning and independent shops, and the Beatles-Abbey Road spoof shot certainly turned a few heads when it was being taken!”
Ian Lloyd, president of Clitheroe Chamber of Trade and Commerce, added: “Clitheroe shops and their owners have a rich cultural heritage and are famous for their award-winning, independent establishments, many of which have been run by the same families for generations, for example Dawsons, Nettletons and H M Sowerbutts Furniture. Our members will be working alongside the poets to capture the essence of Clitheroe’s shopping experience through vivid installations and window displays within their shops and businesses.”

‘Art on the Rails’
The Platform Gallery is housed in Clitheroe’s old Railway Station, and it still has the old railway platform at the rear of the building, assessable from Station Road. To coincide with the “Let’s Do It Weekend” on July 24th /25th the platform will be transformed into an open air art gallery (Weather permitting. Wet weather alternative TBC). The event will promote Ribble Valley based artists by allowing them to show and sell their work (commission free) directly to the public as well as attending a networking event following the weekend providing an opportunity to meet fellow artists, curators, arts officers and others who might help their careers.
Art Group Open Days
As part of the “Let’s Do It Weekend” on July 24th /25th local art groups are hosting group demonstration, participation and taster events, to encourage new members and to share your enthusiasm. The aim of the event is to introduce interested members of the public to interesting ways of producing art and to encourage fledgling artists.
